One of the owners of Waffles & Wedges, Andrea actually started out with Pbon’s Fresh Phood food truck in March 2014. Pbon’s features pretzel roll sandwiches and quality grilled crabcakes that are made without breadcrumbs or fillers and gluten-free. Pbon’s food truck was named after her little brother Patrick Bonner who loved to watch The Fresh Prince of Bel Air! These crabcakes can also be found at Waffles & Wedges featured on the “Nauti (Nautical) Waffle”.
In April 2015, Andrea decided to partner with Laura to open a store front in this location formerly occupied by Mexico on the Square (RIP, you were delicious). The store deals primarily in take-out, but has lots of outdoor seating and is BYO. Waffles & Wedges just opened their own food truck as well a few weeks ago and you can see it April 10th at the Manayunk Spring Streat Food Festival! This summer both these food trucks will be at The Porch at 30th Street, look for Waffles & Wedges in May and August and then Pbon’s in June and September.
Waffles & Wedges is known for their made to order liege waffles and baked potato wedges. They also offer gluten free waffles and pretzel roll sandwiches. Arielle’s first time here she tried the waffle fries “Sloppy Seconds” style- aka with a little bit of everything savory. The waffle fries are previously fried (by the company selling them) and frozen, then baked to order at Waffles & Wedges. While the toppings were good, the dish was a little bit oily overall, and she’d recommend ordering the freshly baked wedges from now on.
Complimentary toppings such as pepper, malt vinegar, colored salts, sriracha, ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce are offered. Sweet toppings such as cinnamon, powdered sugar, and maple syrup are also available.
Lea tried the baked wedges and had a much better experience. The fries weren’t very crispy, but instead nice and soft (perhaps a tad undercooked). The Tipsy Cheese sauce (made with beer) over the wedges was pleasantly mild and didn’t over power the flavor. The Buffalo Chicken wedges come with chucks of breaded white meat chicken tassed in buffalo sauce and then drizzled with ranch. Personally I prefer blue cheese with my buffalo chicken, but the ranch didn’t keep me from enjoying this dish. I would be curious to see if the sweet potato fries are more crispy than the regular potato wedges.
As for the waffles, Arielle tried the “Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus Waffle” – which comes with everything sweet on top. The waffle was a buttermilk waffle- and the toppings, well, they did not joke when they said it would be everything under the sun – toppings included Oreo pieces, m&ms, blueberries, strawberries, coconut, whipped cream, and a cherry.
We’ve also tried the “Revolution Waffle,” a liege waffle topped with Nutella, Fluff, and sliced bananas. We sprinkled some cinnamon and powdered sugar on top to finish it off. This is one of their most popular waffles along with the “Party Waffle” which is a liege waffles with bacon bits inside! We loved the Strawberry Shortcake Gluten Free Waffle and added a scoop of ice cream to the fresh strawberries, marshmallow, and whipped cream topping. We would highly recommend the gluten free waffle here, its so fluffly and soft we couldn’t believe it was gluten free!
Waffles & Wedges also offers waffle sandwiches and pretzel roll sandwiches! Try the “Philly Melt” – a chicken cheesesteak on a pretzel roll. The roll is nice and soft, and overall the sandwich is cheesy and delicious (not at all greasy like a lot of cheesesteaks). We also tried a waffle sandwich with Taylor Pork Roll, Egg, and Cheese. The sweetness of the liege waffle went together nicely with the saltiness of the pork and cheese.
Delivery is offered via Postmates, Grub Hub and Dining In. If you’re coming here for BYO brunch or with a party more than 2 we suggest you plan ahead, this is primarily a take-out spot and it has very limited seating inside until the warm weather when they set up tables and chairs outside. The staff is incredibly friendly, and were happy to help us make our decision and explain the menu. Get a punch card and your 5th waffle gets a free topping and your 10th waffle is free! Although Arielle wasn’t a big fan of this place, Lea enjoyed what she ordered much more. Both our experiences prove that some restaurants are definitely worth going back a second time.
