Luna Café

Old City is home to many quaint spots and recently we swung by Luna Café for a boozy Sunday brunch. Opening in February 2015, the café offers locally sourced breakfast and lunch American Bistro cuisine. The name Luna was inspired by one of the owner Sarah Levine’s favorite children’s book her mom used to read called Stella Luna. It is a story about a fruit bat that think she’s a bird.
Displaying IMG_9758.JPGLuna is a BYOB so bring your favorite bottle of wine, craft beer, or liquor of choice! They offer a wide variety of Certified Organic and Fair Trade hot and cold beverages as well as some unique made in-house juices and smoothies. Like the Green Juice with kale, celery, lemon, cucumber, spinach, and apple. They’ve even got Kombucha which is a hand-crafted gourmet tea that has been shared for thousands of years. Kombucha has been credited with everything from improving liver health and metabolism to preventing hangovers and slowing hair loss. Many devotees find that they enjoy improved energy from regular consumption.
This little spot is ideal for groups of 4 or less and even has some outdoor seating for during the warmer weather! They are also committed to environmental and sustainability efforts in every aspect of the café, even down to our eco-friendly take-out containers and cleaning products.
Owner Sarah Levine has lived in Philly for the past ten years and has always worked in restaurants, all throughout college and grad school so it was just an industry she was super familiar with. She has always loved to cook, her mom is great cook and taught her from a very young age. After dreaming about some day opening her own restaurant, her passion and values to life with Luna Café.

What is great about Luna Café is they serve breakfast and lunch all day, everyday. You won’t have to wait for the weekend. Au Fournil Bakery provides the tarts, crossaints, and Wild Flour Bakery provides muffins, brownies, and fresh baked bread. Some of the most popular items include Breakfast Tacos with scrambled eggs, sausage, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, and a house-made cilantro aioli, or Fried Chicken and Waffles with a homemade waffle, crispy fried chicken, and a white maple gravy that brings a little southern flair to Philadelphia.
We started our brunch off with Avocado Toast on gluten-free bread and Luna Loaded Potatoes (also gluten-free) with a heaping mound of breakfast potatoes, melted cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, and green onions with the option to add bacon or an egg. Our favorite dish of the day was Breakfast Bowl with warm quinoa, black beans, cheddar cheese, avocado and cilantro aioli on a bed of arugula and topped with a sunny side up egg. You can also add pesto, tofu scramble, bacon or sausage.

Lunch lovers enjoy the Smoked Gouda & Turkey Croissant made with local smoked gouda and sliced turkey, spring mix, tomato, and mayo on a buttery croissant. Vegetarians and vegans like to order The Big Green with tofu scramble, caramelized onions, sautéed kale, mushrooms and roasted red peppers, or Black Bean Veggie Burger made with puréed black bean and kale patty with a balsamic-soaked portabello topped with arugula and cilantro aioli, served on a challah bun. Delivery is not available so swing by Market Street to check out Luna Café for yourself!
