Its one healthy food that we all can agree we love- hummus. This creamy lucious dip or spread is made with a base of smashed chick peas and tahini (sesame paste). Hummus is a meal staple in the middle east, and Mediterranean. Luckily, Hummus Grill is located conveniently in University City and Ardmore, PA so we don’t have to go far for fresh and healthy food. The restaurant opened up in 2008 by Fabrice Saadoun and Yaron Netz. Neither had worked in the restaurant industry, but they saw a lack of fast, fresh, and healthy food options for students in the area.
They consulted with an Israeli friend who owned his own restaurant in the United States, but he was returning to Israel. It was ideal timing and they ended up buying up some of his restaurant furniture. There were many nights of experimenting with ingredients and recipes at home in Bala Cynwyd. They even set-up their own shawarma in the garage and had neighbors and friends come over to be taste testers.
Built shawarma in the garage and tested it on neighbors and friends. Fabrice also spoke to sister in Israel about recipes and dishes for their menu.
When Hummus Grill first opened they were packed! Without hardly any marketing or advertising diners were coming in after hearing about the restaurant through word of mouth. The menu
contains dishes inspired by Middle Eastern, Israeli, and Mediterranean cuisine with Shawarma, Falafel, Pita, Hummus, Salads and much more. The hummus is made with a signature recipe of puréed chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and garlic (so its totally vegan!) They serve it with white or wheat pita bread.
We love the Hummus Salad with spring mix topped with carrots, cucumber, onion, red bell pepper, tomato, chickpeas, avocado, hummus, and fresh vegetables. Add the grilled salmon with Provence herbs for more protein. There is also the option to add lamb kabob, chicken kabob, beef kabob, falafel, chicken breast, schnitzel or shawarma. We also love the Salad Plate featuring your choice of 4 dishes- Israeli salad, baba ganoush, potato salad, tabouli, eggplant, carrots, cabbage, or beets.
If you’ve never had Shawarma you should really try it! Its marinated chicken thighs that are slowly cooked on a spit and shaved to order. One of the most popular items on the menu, the Shawarma Platter won Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best of Philly” award. We like it served in pita or wrap with your choice of toppings including hummus, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, cabbage, onion, hot sauce, and tahini. Hummus Grill even serves Vegan Shawarma. Gluten free options include falafel, salads, and platters (without pita). Vegetarians loved the Grilled Portobello Mushroom Pita. The Lamb Kabob served here is also very unique. Its grilled skewers of lamb seasoned with smoked spices and truffle oil.
For dessert they offer Baklava. Get Hummus Grill delivered to you with online orders via Grubhub. They even have their own app which offers rewards! They also offer catering options if you’re looking for something fresh and healthy to feed your co-workers, friends and family.
