The night before Thanksgiving is notorious for meeting with old friends and enjoying a few drinks. Why not check out the latest additions to the Suga by Foo Happy Hour menu this year? If you’ve already got plans, don’t worry- they’re serving up specials Monday-Friday from 5:00-7:00 pm and Friday- Saturday 10:00 pm till midnight.

Susanna Foo first created a name for herself as a culinary pioneer of gourmet Chinese food in the United States. Now she is back making her mark on the city of Philadelphia with her son, Gabriel Foo. Susanna has been acknowledged as one of the best Chinese chefs in the country by USA Today and hailed as an innovator by Gourmet, Food & Wine, Esquire and The New York Times. With two cookbooks and two James Beard Awards, Foo is highly decorated in the food world and knows that altering the ordinary is the key to success. This is her first restaurant, with her son, Gabriel Foo, a true connoisseur of gourmet food and wine. Susanna Foo’s influences are derived from her upbringing in Taiwan, and her training at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. “Modern Chinese” is the fusion of classical Chinese and fresh Western ingredients with Foo’s signature French style of cooking. “

The recently developed specialty cocktail list features creative concoctions including: the Foo Fighter made with coconut-infused sake, kaffir lime and ginger; the Good-Natured Gabe combining rye, raw honey and fresh lemon; and the All That Jasmine featuring jasmine tea-infused gin, Aperol and Q tonic. Fans of The Sparkling Susanna with bubbles, passionfruit and elderflower liqueurs, will be happy as one of the few that remains on the specialty cocktail menu. These cocktails are offered for only $7 during happy hour. A house-selected white and red by the glass are $6 and bottles of Tsingtao Beer are $5. The happy hour that will have tongues buzzing is the Sparkling Peach Jelly Sake Shot for $5.  Imported from Japan, found only at SUGA, the refreshing and slightly fizzy peach flavored sake presents like liquid but has a jelly texture. It is also available as a specialty cocktail.

“We’re excited to bring new flavors to the happy hour menu,” said Gabe Foo, SUGA’s general manager. “Our location makes us a natural stop for Center City workers come five o’clock and we love to tweak the menus to keep it fresh and satisfying.”

“Making people happy has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Bringing a smile to a customer or friend’s face with the bite of a dumpling or the sip of a cocktail is what makes me truly happy so naturally, I love happy hour and am proud of the new menus,” said Susanna Foo, chef at SUGA.

Susanna Foo’s signature style of fusion cooking with heavy nods to her varied heritage shines in the new Petite Plates menu available during happy hour giving diners delicious, yet moderately priced ($3-$6) samples of her cuisine. Snacks and easily-shared bites include: Scallion Pancakes, Sichuan Beef Tacos, and Crispy Shrimp Spring Rolls. Of course we love the Tongpo Pork Bao Bun, which melt-in-your mouth with thier braised pork belly nestled inside soft and fluffy buns. And you know that Susanna Foo is a dumpling master so you cannot miss the Curried Chicken Dumping. Make sure to check out all the varieties on the full menu- there is even a sampler option to try them all!
